CPA London
The Centre for Psychological Astrology

CPA LondonThe CPA provides a unique workshop and professional training programme, designed to foster the cross-fertilisation of the fields of astrology and depth, humanistic, and transpersonal psychology.
The world-renowned Centre for Psychological Astrology was founded by Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas in 1983.

Aims

The Centre for Psychological Astrology offers a professional training course in psychological astrology. The main aims and objective are:

a) To provide students with a solid and broad base of knowledge both within the realm of traditional astrological symbolism and technique in the field of psychology, so that the astrological chart can be sensitively understood and interpreted in the light of modern psychological thought.

b) To make available to students psychologically qualified case supervision along with background seminars in counselling skills and techniques that would raise the standard and effectiveness of astrological consultation. It should be noted that no formal training as a counsellor or therapist is provided by the course.

c) To encourage investigation and research into the links between astrology, psychological models and therapeutic techniques, thereby contributing to and advancing the already existing body of astrological and psychological knowledge.

History

The Centre for Psychological Astrology began unofficially in 1980 as a sporadic series of classes and seminars offered by Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas, covering all aspects of astrology from beginners’ courses to more advanced one-day seminars. In 1981 additional evening courses and seminars by other tutors were interspersed with those of Liz and Howard to increase the variety of material offered to students, and Juliet Sharman-Burke and Warren Kenton began contributing their expertise in Tarot and Kabbalah. It then seemed appropriate to take what was previously simply a random collection of astrology classes and put them under a single umbrella so in 1982 the “prototype” of the CPA - the Centre for Transpersonal Astrology - was born, with the administrative work handled by Richard Aisbitt, himself a practising astrologer.

In 1983 the name was changed to the Centre for Psychological Astrology, because a wide variety of psychological approaches was incorporated into the seminars, ranging from transpersonal psychology to the work of Jung, Freud and Klein. The Diploma Course was eventually created, with additional tutors joining the staff. The Centre continued to develop and consolidate its programme despite the tragic death of Howard in 1992, when Charles Harvey became co-director with Liz Greene. Richard Aisbitt continued to manage the administration until 1994, when the burden of increasing ill health forced him to restrict his contribution to beginners’ and intermediate classes. At this time Juliet Sharman-Burke took over the administration for the Centre. Richard himself sadly died in 1996.

At the beginning of 2000, Charles Harvey tragically died of cancer, leaving Liz Greene as sole director. In the new Millennium, the CPA continues to develop along both familiar and innovative lines, always maintaining the high standards reflected in the fine work of its former co-directors.

CPA LondonThe Centre’s course is based on the academic module system where credits are collected for each seminar attended. The student is required to attend 48 one-day seminars and 30 three-hour case Supervision groups. Seminar samples are listed below. Of the 48 seminars, most of which are optional, the Psychological Approaches seminars are compulsory. These include days spent on the work of Freud, Jung, Psychosynthesis, Gestalt, etc., as well as the Counselling Techniques Seminar. The course runs on a three-term system, with new terms commencing in September, January and May. There are roughly ten seminars per term. We recommend you choose between 4 and 6 per term to spread the seminars evenly over 3 years. The regular course tutors are Director Liz Greene, Senior Tutor Darby Costello, Lynn Bell, Dermod Moore, Clare Martin, Karen Hamaker-Zondag, Alexander von Schlieffen and Juliet Sharman-Burke. In addition the CPA regularly invites visiting tutors including Bernadette Brady and Michael Lutin.

In order to facilitate students with daytime commitments, the one-day seminars are held on weekends, usually Sundays, and the case supervision meetings are held on weekends or Monday weekdays or evenings. The supervisors are trained therapists and astrologers and each student has the opportunity of presenting case material from the charts he or she is working on. The groups consist of roughly eight people, never more than ten. Once a year an in-depth oral assessment will be conducted either individually or with one other student, which will count as case supervision hours. The written work required will involve submitting a portfolio recording your reflections and observations of the seminars and supervision groups once a year. It is expected that it will be a form of self-assessment and can be used to help you process the material received in the teaching and supervision and your feelings about them. On completing the required number of seminars, supervision groups and written work, the student is entitled to receive the Certificate in Psychological Astrology.

In order to be awarded the Diploma in Psychological Astrology the student, on completing the seminar and supervision requirements, must do a Reading In Paper. This involves presenting to the Director, Liz Greene, and two tutors, the chart of a client with whom you have worked personally and in some depth, and whom you have seen for at least 3 sessions. The presentation should be written and then read out to the tutors. It should take about 3 hours, and include a detailed case, natal chart analysis and discussion of all areas of the chart including transits and progressions. The second part of the presentation should focus on your synastry with the client and the areas of over-lap and the ease or difficulty of your relationship. The tutors wish to see evidence of your astrological fluency as well as your style of working.

Qualifications, Criteria

Qualifications

Fulfillment of the seminar and supervision requirements of the In-Depth Professional Training Course entitles the trainee to a Certificate of Completion. Upon acceptance of the Reading In Paper, the student is entitled to the Centre’s Diploma inPsychological Astrology, with permission to use the letters, Dip.Psych.Astrol. The director reserves the right to refuse permission for a student she deems unsuitable to go forward for the Reading In Paper, and if the paper itself is not up to standard, the exercise may have to be repeated. The successful graduate will be able to apply the principles and techniques learned during the course to his or her professional activities, either as a consultant astrologer or as a useful adjunct to other forms of psychological counseling.

Career prospects are good, as there is an ever-increasing demand for the services of capable psychologically orientated astrologers. The CPA offers a one-year Beginners Introduction to Psychological Astrology Course, which takes place on weekday evenings.

The CPA Diploma does not constitute a formal counselling or psycho-therapeutic training, therefore students who wish to undertake work as ongoing counsellors or therapists are encouraged to complete a further training course focussing on these skills. There are many excellent courses and schools of various persuasions available in the U.K. and abroad. CPA students who have successfully completed the Diploma Course and have qualified with a recognised psychotherapy or counselling training group can, if they wish, be placed on our referral list of counselling astrologers.

Criteria

The following guidelines for admission to the In-Depth Professional Training Programme are applied:

a) A sound basic knowledge of the meaning of the signs, planets, houses, aspects, transits and progressions, equal to Certificate Level of the Faculty of Astrology Studies course. The Centre itself offers an introductory course in its public programme, takes the student to the required level of knowledge.

b) Being able and willing to work on one’s own individual development, as reflected by the requirement of individual therapy during the programme.

c) Adequate educational background and communication ability will be looked for in applicants, as well as a degree of empathy, integrity and sense of responsibility.

Individual Therapy

In order to complete the In-Depth Professional Training, the Centre asks that all students, for a minimum of one year of study, be involved in a recognised form of depth psychotherapy with a therapist, analyst or counsellor of his or her choice. The fee for the Centre’s training does not include the cost of this therapy, which must be borne by the student himself/herself.

The rationale behind this requirement is that we believe no responsible counsellor of any persuasion can hope to deal sensitively and wisely with another person’s psyche without some experience of his or her own. Although it is the student’s responsibility to arrange for this therapy, the Centre can refer students to various psychotherapeutic organisations, if desired.
