Liz Greene Portrait
The Astrologer's Astrologer

Liz Greene is held in high esteem by astrologers all over the world, professional and non-professional alike. She is a prolific author of books and various publications and has been instrumental in shaping modern psychological astrology.

Liz GreeneShe holds a doctorate in psychology and is a qualified Jungian analyst. She also holds a diploma in counselling from the Centre for Transpersonal Psychology in London, and a diploma from the Faculty of Astrological Studies, of which she is a lifetime Patron.

When the Psychological Horoscope Analysis was developed, between 1985 and 1987, it set a milestone in the history of psychological astrology. Liz Greene, the author, and Alois Treindl, a brilliant programmer, created a computerized horoscope interpretation which, to this day, has not been equalled in quality. While earlier computer reports simply listed the elements of an astrological interpretation as unrelated blocks, Alois Treindl, a specialist in "artificial intelligence", went quite a bit further. He was able to create a program which could simulate Liz Greene's very own method of horoscope interpretation during a personal reading.

Liz GreeneInstead of producing a list of sometimes contradictory elements of interpretation, the Astro*Intelligence Horoscope Analyses present the reader with a synthesis of the astrological chart, a personal profile describing their basic disposition, strong main themes and shadow figures. The unique combination of astrology, Jungian psychology and an amazing literary gift on the one hand, with real programming genius on the other, has led to the enduring success of these reports.

Liz GreeneThe Psychological Horoscope Analysis was followed by the Child's Horoscope, the Relationship Horoscope, the Yearly Horoscope Analysis and the Long Term Analysis. In response to frequent requests over the past years, Liz Greene has written a new analysis called "Career and Vocation".

Beside her untiring work as an author of astrological books as well as writing for Astrodienst, Liz Greene co-directs the Centre for Psychological Astrology, a well-known school in London. She also directs the CPA Press, a publishing company that focuses on specialist astrological works.

Interview with Liz Greene
about the Horoscope "Career and Vocation"

"Vocation is not about finding a job that makes money, it's about feeling that you're living a useful life by doing something that you love."

P.I.:
Your new report, "Career and Vocation", is about to be launched. What can your readers expect?

Liz Greene:
A great many people have no idea what direction to go in because they don't understand themselves. Even when they train, they base their decisions on whether there's a market need. They ask questions like, "Is there a job opening here?" or "Can I make any money if I do this job?" This isn't the way to find any real satisfaction in what you do. You've got to move from the inside out. Beruf und BerufungBefore you begin the issue of training or choosing a university programme, you have to know something about who you are and what kinds of things you love; what you value and what your skills are; what you're good at and what you're not good at. Once you have a pretty good picture of these things, you can make a more intelligent choice about what sort of direction to go in. Vocation is not about finding a job that makes money, it's about feeling that you're living a useful life by doing something that you love. You can then develop your aptitudes in service of that, rather than choosing a job simply to pay for the rent or the weekly groceries. One has to move from the inside out, rather than from the outside in. The report is meant to give insights on that level. One needs to foster more of a psychological attitude to work, rather than looking at it as a purely external thing.

P.I.:
Do you give the reader any advice on what sort of a job to look for?

Liz Greene:
Not in a specific sense. The programme is not going to tell anyone what particular job is exactly right. A horoscope cannot be that specific. It's not going to spare one the actual labour of thinking for oneself. It gives general guidelines. For example, someone may have an aptitude for working with people - they may be sensitive, tactful, and deeply concerned with people's welfare. That's a vocation. There are many jobs that could come under the general umbrella of "the Carer": a therapist, a counsellor, a teacher, a certain kind of lawyer, a personnel director. If the general umbrella makes sense, the specific job is more likely to fall in place.

K.B.:
Are there certain planets and constellations that play an important role in these interpretations?

Liz Greene:
To some extent, yes. But I think vocation really involves the whole chart. Traditionally, astrologers look at the 10th or 6th houses, or the sign at the MC. That doesn't really work. Vocation is about the whole person, and finding something that can satisfy as many parts of that whole person as possible. In part of the programme, I focus quite strongly on the Sun, because the Sun has a lot to do with the individual's feeling of being someone special and having a special destiny or purpose in life. But that's only one part of it. The whole chart has to be considered.

"If someone has a very lively mind and a lot of intellectual curiosity, and they have a job where they fill envelopes or stuff boxes all day, they are going to end up hating every minute of it."

P.I.:
What sort of issues are addressed?

Liz Greene:
The first part of the programme is about the overall way the individual looks at life - the best-adapted mode of perception and the basic strengths of the temperament. It goes into whether the person is more mentally oriented or more tactile, whether they are highly imaginative or more inclined to interact with the world on a feeling level. It's a general overview, and it immediately becomes clear that certain kinds of work won't be suitable for certain temperaments. For example, if someone has a very lively mind and a lot of intellectual curiosity, and they have a job where they fill envelopes or stuff boxes all day, they are going to end up hating every minute of it.

The second part is more detailed, and goes into specific aptitudes and skills. It's based on the whole chart, although particular factors may be highlighted. There's an emphasis on "What are you good at?" and "What kind of working environment will be most pleasing to you?" Some people need to work in a team, some do well in more institutionalised structures, some prefer working on their own. The report goes into personal issues like this.

The next part deals with limitations and conflicts that one might need to be aware of. These are not necessarily flaws or things people "do wrong". But we all have limits. There are certain innate areas of difficulty, and there's not a lot of point in trying to make yourself be something you're not. Some limitations can be very creative, if you know what they are. You can work with them and turn them into an advantage.

The final part has three sections. There's a section dealing with how the individual works with others; it describes their particular issues in work relationships, if there are any special issues. Someone might not really enjoy the company of others, or they may be too controlling toward others. Then there's a section which deals with particular fears and anxieties with regard to achievement and success, if there are any. This section is concerned with where the deepest insecurities might lie and what they might be about.

Finally, there's a section dealing with what success really means to that individual. People measure success very differently. For some people, its material - they feel successful because they have a beautiful home or a lot of money in the bank. To other people, this doesn't matter at all, as long as they feel useful, or they've helped others, or they've been loyal to an artistic vision. The final section is about the person's deepest values, which show what they need to do in order to feel they have really made the best of their life.

P.I.:
Can someone's vocation change as he or she grows older?

Liz Greene:
In a superficial sense, yes. People change direction all the time. Some take a very long time finding a direction. So, on the surface, yes, people change. But the core of the person doesn't really change. Usually, when somebody goes through a lot of different working situations, they're either trying to find something which really suits them, or they're going through different external expressions which all come from the same core. Someone might start off as a therapist and then decide they're going to train as a doctor, and then give that up and become an astrologer or a healer, but you'll see the same inner thread running through all these external forms. They have the same core. There is an unchanging essence in all of us, which is what the birth chart portrays. A sense of vocation develops over the course of a lifetime. With many people it develops very slowly; they may not really feel they've found their vocation until they reach the middle part of life, or sometimes even the latter part. And they're constantly looking for it and trying different things. The core of the person from which a sense of vocation arises has something that remains constant. The closer you get to expressing this core, the more fulfilled you will be in your work.

"The closer you get to expressing this core, the more fulfilled you will be in your work. "

P.I.:
So it's really the same issue on different levels?

Liz Greene:
Yes, exactly. The deepest purpose of this kind of astrological work is to get to the core, rather than being preoccupied by the external "try-ons" that people go through. The individual's life is always characteristic of the individual - there's nothing in it that's random. When people make choices, such as moving from one job to another, it may look as though there's no connection. But there is, and finding this connection will show us what this person is really looking for. What is the search for? What are they really striving towards? The closer one can get to that, the more likely one is to choose a work vehicle that reflects the whole individual as much as possible. No external vehicle can entirely mirror the inside of the person, but if it is sufficiently "right", then one can say, "Yes, this is what I'm meant to be doing, this is rewarding, this is satisfying." Even if there are conflicts, there is a sense being in the right place and of loving what one does. It has to come from the heart, and that doesn't change. The things that we truly love don't change.

P.I.:
Would you advise the use of the horoscope in a professional context, by businesses or employers?

Liz Greene:
I think it can be very valuable if it is used wisely and without personal prejudice. There needs to be some sophistication on the part of whoever is doing the employing. They shouldn't be too rigid in their judgement. Then a horoscope can be enormously helpful. The horoscope can't say, "This person will perform their work well", because all sorts of things can happen, and people don't always use their full potential. The individual might be happy for a while and then get into conflict with someone else in the office, or decide to go and have a baby. If you're looking for an employee who is comfortable accepting orders and is able to produce routine work in a conscientious way, you need to find someone whose temperament is suited to that kind of position. There are certain temperaments that will have difficulty fitting into this kind of work structure. And if you hire someone who doesn't fit, they will always be waiting for the chance to have something more, and if they can't have something more, they'll leave. Knowing things like that can be very valuable for the employer, and certainly, a horoscope can indicate this. It's not a judgement on whether the person is a good or bad worker, or a good or bad person. They simply may have strengths in an area that doesn't fit the job requirements. On the other hand, the person may be very good at exactly the sort of position you want to fill. In this sense, I think the analysis can be a very valuable tool for employers, as long as it is not used judgementally or to predict the unpredictable.

"The challenge is to understand what one loves, because even though external structures will change in the job market, the spirit that animates an individual's vocation will remain. "

K.B.:
How can people find a vocation in our times, when job-requirements are changing so quickly and a lot of business is conceived on a short-term basis?

Liz Greene:
I've tried to address that issue in the way in which the programme is framed. That's why it's not possible to be specific and say that someone should work for a certain company, or that they should do a particular type of job. The technology may move on so quickly that a particular job may not exist in a couple of years. It's the core of the individual that the programme addresses.
The challenge is to understand what one loves, because even though external structures will change in the job market, the spirit that animates an individual's vocation will remain. Of course it's a nuisance if you suddenly find that the company you work for is going down. But if you know who you are and what you have to offer, you can find something else that resonates in the same way. If you have to learn new skills, that's all right, because the motive is there to learn them.

K.B.:
So it's really always about the core ...

Liz Greene:
Yes. I think that's what vocation is all about. This is why so many people are miserable in their jobs - it never occurs to them that a person's work has to reflect the person. If you love ritual, rhythm, and routine, you can enjoy laying bricks, which can be a true art form and a beautiful thing for a craftsman. But equally, if bricks suddenly disappeared from the list of usable building materials, you could still bring that love of making things in rhythmical patterns to any material you're working with. We look too much at the external world when we start thinking about what we want to do with our lives. We ask, "How can I be successful? Where will I make the most money? What do my parents want me to do? What kind of job would be the most respectable and earn me a place in the community?" We keep looking outside, rather than finding out who we are, what we want to contribute to the world, and what we love and value.

K.B.:
So many people are swamped by constant input, floods of information, demands for new skills, new technologies, cultural uprootedness. How can they cope?

Liz Greene:
When people feel swamped by chaos, it's often because there's no sense of a core. They have no sense of a centre, and so everything hits them from the outside and they fragment. They don't know what to listen to. Where is the truth? The cultural shifts, the bombardment of information, the technological changes, the current lack of security in work - there is tremendous instability in the world at the moment. The only way to cope with all this flux is to have something inside that is very solid, where you know what you are, what you're good at, and what you love doing. Once you've got that, you can make the adaptations that are required. You might not like all of them, but nobody promised that life would be fair. It all depends on whether or not you can make the necessary adaptations based on a solid sense of self. A person can always learn new skills - you can learn how to use a computer, you can learn another language, you can learn new artistic techniques if you apply yourself. But you can't learn to be someone else.

This interview took place in autumn 2000 with Karin Baasch and Peter Isler.

Interview with Liz Greene
Astrology and Computer Horoscopes

Question:
In 1987, you and Alois Treindl created the first AstroIntelligence computer horoscope together - the "Psychological Horoscope Analysis". Being a psychologist and counselling astrologer, what was your motivation to join in the creation of a computer generated horoscope? What fascinates you about this work?

Liz Greene:
Astro*IntelligenceInitially my motivation in working on a computer-generated horoscope was curiosity: if it were possible for the computer to be programmed to synthesise horoscope factors according to an "expert system" rather than the usual linear, non-synthesised interpretations on which all other computer-generated horoscopes are based, could it come close to a valid description of character and psychological motivation? I had no clear idea of what would come out, or even if it would work at all. I was very surprised by the results. I do not think it would have been possible with any other programmer, since Alois is quite brilliant in this field, and unique in terms of his ability to combine computer science with a knowledge of astrology.

Question:
Is it possible to understand a person's personality with the help of a computer generated horoscope?

Liz Greene:
If the factors in the horoscope are synthesised and considered as a dynamic energy pattern rather than a static list of personality traits, yes, a computer-generated horoscope can offer quite profound insights into a person’s inherent character and development pattern. The difficulty with most computer-generated reports is that the human psyche operates according to particular laws and energy dynamics which affect the way different parts of the horoscope are expressed. If psychological knowledge is not applied to the birth horoscope and blended with the different chart configurations in a computer-generated report, one winds up with merely a list of characteristics many of which contradict each other, and there is no central focus or sense of a living individual at the core.

Question:
How does an AstroIntelligence horoscope compare with face-to-face astrological counselling? Can such a written report replace personal dialogue?

Liz Greene:
LabyrinthA written report cannot replace the personal dialogue between an astrologer and a client, although it can be immensely helpful. The most important factor which is missing in a computer-generated horoscope, however sophisticated it might be, is that the computer cannot determine in what ways the individual has applied free will and choice in terms of how they express the different dimensions of the birth chart. A birth chart cannot indicate consciousness, and a person who has chosen to do inner work and has made the effort tointegrate the hidden sides of their personality will express planets, signs and aspects quite differently from a very unconscious person who simply acts without reflection and blames their problems and conflicts on everyone else. The difference here lies in the level of expression, rather than in the basic character itself. The inherent personality is given in the horoscope, and also the likely ways in which it will unfold over time. But the more conscious we are, the less "fated" we are by our unconscious complexes and compulsions. Only a dialogue with the client can reveal to what extent the individual has accepted responsibility for their own psyche and their own life.

Question:
Apart from the Psychological Horoscope, you have written several others like the Child's Horoscope, Career and Vocation or the Relationship Horoscope. Do you have any plans for further projects?

Liz Greene:
We have discussed several possibilities for new projects, and one or two of these will probably be developed over the next year or so. The favourite at the moment is a programme dealing with the issue of what happens to us on a psychological level when we leave our birth place and relocate somewhere else in the world. As the world’s population is becoming increasingly mobile, this is a very interesting area to explore, and many people have already requested such a programme. We cannot trade in our birth chart by moving somewhere else, and it would not be wise to base such an important life decision merely on the evidence of a relocation chart; but there are subtle changes in the way we express our birth charts which could be very helpful to understand when such a move actually does take place.

Astrology in a modern world

Question:
Astrology has been practised for more than 3000 years. Do you think such an old "science" has the potential to help with the solution of the complex problems of our modern world - on an individual as well as collective level?

Liz Greene:
Astro*IntelligenceAlthough our views of the cosmos have changed over three millennia, and our technology has altered our way of relating to external reality, the essential nature of human beings has not changed much, if at all, over that time. Astrology is the first psychology and is still perhaps the most sophisticated one, and it continues to be a tremendously helpful symbolic map of the essential patterns of development within both individuals and collectives. The remarkable thing about the astrological map is that it has so many layers and levels, and is compatible with many different psychological and spiritual perspectives. Studying the horoscopes of nations and their leaders can certainly help us to gain a deeper understanding of world events. But ultimately the complex problems of the modern world can only be solved by individuals who are willing to take up the responsibility of living their own lives more consciously and creatively. Here astrology is perhaps the most useful tool of all, because it can offer so many insights into self-understanding. And self-understanding is essential if we wish to make intelligent and constructive choices that might contribute to a better world.

Question:
In his book "Psychology of the future", the well-known American psychiatrist Stanislav Grof writes that he has found astrology to be an indispensable tool in understanding the human psyche. Can you envisage the integration of astrological concepts in the wider field of psychology in the near future?

Liz Greene:
Astrology has been integrated for a long time into the area of what is known as depth psychology; Jung used birth horoscopes to gain insight into his patients, and courses in astrology have been taught at various Jungian Institutes around the world for many years. There are also many Psychosynthesis practitioners who use astrology to augment their understanding of their clients. The value of astrological interpretation has already made its mark in many spheres of modern psychology. Clinical psychology as taught at universities has also begun to be influenced by astrology, at least in the United Kingdom, where astrological research has been carried out at the University of London and Southampton University. Post-graduate courses in the history of astrology are being taught at other UK universities such as the University of Kent, the University of Leicester and Bath Spa University College. Something similar appears to be happening in the US as well. There seems to be a growing interest in incorporating astrology into academic programmes, including those in psychology. I believe it will not be long before it becomes more or less accepted as a valuable tool in psychology and psychotherapy. The value of the astrological map as a picture of the individual’s inherent psychological patterning is enormous, and so is the applicability of astrology to particular times in life when a person is going through important experiences that need to be understood more deeply. The entry of Uranus into Pisces and, after a few more years, Neptune into Pisces, is likely to shift our focus from technology and collective thinking to the inner world, the imagination, the spirit and the hidden dimensions of reality. This will undoubtedly bring astrology into the limelight as an avenue of exploration of these deeper levels of life.

Seminar-Programm

Saturday/Sunday 17/18 June 1995
Liz Greene, England: Male and Female in the Birth Chart

This weekend's seminar will explore the balance and interrelationship of masculine and feminine in terms of signs, planets and the individual birth chart. Psychological issues involving sexuality, social conditioning and parental patterns will also be examined in the context of astrological configurations.

Saturday/Sunday 16/17 September 1995
Charles Harvey, England: Polarities, Opposites, Tensions and Resolutions in the Astrological Chart

We exist poised "between the gods and the beasts", between consciousness and unconsciousness, between society and self, between optimism and pessimism, love and hate, triumph and tragedy and many other contradictions. Using example charts and the charts of students, we will explore the dynamics of some of the polarities within the birth chart and the human condition. We will examine how these opposites express in the world and look at ways in which we can find a creative resolution and reconciliation for our own dilemmas and paradoxes.

Charles has been a consultant astrologer since 1966 and is one of the world's leading experts in astrology. He has been president of the Astrological Association of Great Britain since 1973. Since 1992 he has been Co-Director of the Centre for Psychological Astrology, London, together with Liz Greene. He is especially interested in the application of astrology to world affairs and economics. Among his publications are the well-known books Mundane Astrology and Working with Astrology (both available in German). Charles is able to understand German.

Liz Greene, England: Pluto in Sagittarius: Fear, Fundamentalism and the Changing Face of God

Using the transit of Pluto into Sagittarius as a basis, this weekend's seminar will explore the shifts and changes occurring in the religious and spiritual spheres, in relation to both the individual and the collective. Aspects of Pluto's transits in individual charts will be examined, as well as a broader historical context and the present trends now revealing themselves in esoteric and exoteric religious paths. The psychology of fundamentalism, relevant to individuals as well as groups, will be thoroughly examined. Saturday 4 November 1995 Charles Harvey, England: Is Your Mars Angry or Depressed? Understanding Mars and how to Work with it in the Birth Chart

Assert yourself or die! Mars is essential for our physical survival, health and achievement. When inadequately expressed, it can lead to our selling ourselves short, to depression and self-sabotage. When out of control, Mars can produce violence, tyranny and destruction. Using example charts and the charts of students we will examine the function and pathology of Mars, and how we can work with it and transmute its energy for the benefit of ourselves and others.

Seminars between Oct. 1985 and May 1995 are not listed.

Liz Greene, England: The Astrology of Death
The subject of death is an uncomfortable one for the astrologer, not least because astrological tradition was deeply concerned with predicting death and this approach is often confusing or impossible for a psychologically inclined practitioner. This seminar will explore through examples not only the kinds of configuration which occur at the time of death, but also the thorny issue of whether or not death is predictable, and on what level. Additional complications such as suicide will be examined, as well as the moral issues confronting the astrologer who is asked to predict death for a client.

Saturday 23 March 1996
Charles Harvey, England: Polarities -- Keys to Chart Interpretation
Jung said, "The psychology of the individual is the balance of opposites within him". Analysing the birth chart in terms of its different opposites is one of the simplest yet most powerful keys to our own and our clients' self-awareness. This seminar will explore the dynamics, paradoxes and creative resolutions of such polarities as Sun-Moon, Venus-Mars, and Saturn with each of the planets.

Saturday 29 June 1996
Charles Harvey, England: Transits and the Individuation Process
Our journey from the embrace of the Great Mother to the embrace of our own individual soul is a perilous and demanding one. Paradoxically, the cycles of the outer planets which mark out the current developments within the collective consciousness are also the keys and signposts to our own individual growth and self-awareness. This seminar explores how we may better listen to and work with these cycles in "the work" with ourselves and our clients.

Saturday 28 September 1996
Liz Greene, Küsnacht: Uranus and the Art of Stealing Fire
Uranus is usually defined in astrology as "individuality", yet this outer planet has little to do with individual values and development. This seminar will explore the Uranian spirit as a powerful collective force affecting both individuals and groups. We will examine not only the planet's meaning in the individual birth chart, but also in national charts, and historically in its cyclical configurations with other planets and their repercussions in human social, scientific, religious and artistic development.

Saturday 23 November 1996
Liz Greene, Küsnacht: The Transits of Saturn and Uranus
The movements of Saturn and Uranus form a pattern of cyclical development which affects everyone at particular stages in life. Father and son yet eternal enemies in myth, these planets reflect internal needs and drives which pull us in opposite directions. This seminar will explore both planets, in terms of their meaning individually and together as a dynamic pair, in aspect to natal planets and to their own natal positions, to gain greater understanding of certain critical junctures in life

Saturday 30 November 1996
Charles Harvey, England: The Astrology of Death Part 2
Following on Liz Greene's Part 1, Charles will look further at this all important, but usually avoided, dimension of life. Death comes to us all. Part of the traditional astrologer's job was to assess when the terminus vitae would be likely to arrive. Modern astrologers eschew such fatalism. There are many deaths. Dying to our old habits and assumptions, letting go, losing control, facing "the end of the road" in work, family and relationships, can be as difficult as facing the inevitability of the physical end of our own life and our loved ones. Astrology, through transits, progressions and other methods, offers us powerful indications of such Rites of Passage and helps us to think about, and co-operate with, the inevitability of change and Death itself.

Liz Greene, Küsnacht: Complexes and Projection in the Horoscope

The idea of the complex is one of depth psychology's most important building-blocks, and it can enhance our astrological interpretations enormously, because complexes are really what we experience as fate. This seminar will explore the complex as it appears in the individual horoscope - what it means and how it works, from both clinical and archetypal perspectives, and as both pathology and inherent destiny.

Saturday 22 March 1997
Liz Greene, Küsnacht: Relationships and how to survive them
Synastry is the astrological technique of assessing dynamics of any relationship through examining the interaction of two charts. This seminar will explore the tools of synastry, both traditional and not so traditional, to shed light not only on "compatibility" but also the deeper levels on which two people enter and affect each other's personalities and lives.

Saturday 28 June 1997
Liz Greene, Küsnacht: Sanity and Madness in the Horoscope

Definitions of sanity and psychological normality change according to the times, and also vary according to the perspective taken. Most people experience altered states of consciousness, however brief, which might be construed as "mad" - even when they are apparently at their most normal. This seminar will explore the condition of "madness" - temporary, permanent, partial, and complete - from several different psychological as well mythological and astrological perspectives.

Saturday 4 October 1997
Liz Greene, Küsnacht: The Generation Gap

In common thinking, a generation is a particular age group determined by the age difference with one's parents or one's children, and it is assumed that there will always be friction between the generations. In astrology, however, generations are not described by parent-child age differences; they are reflected by particular cyclical aspects between the heavy planets from Saturn through Pluto, marking specific groups born under these configurations with certain shared responsibilities, tasks, dreams, conflicts, aspirations, and responses. These shared collective experiences are also triggered by transits at particular times, and specific groups undergo certain challenges, inner and outer, which may not be shared or felt by other age groups in the same way. Understanding the qualities of one's astrological generation can help us to understand not only ourselves but the reasons why we may fall into conflict with parents, grandparents, children, and entire social groups with whom we experience grievances and misunderstandings.

Saturday 1 November 1997
Charles Harvey, London: Money and Astrology I

This introductory seminar on financial astrology will look at the ways in which astrology can help us understand our relationship to Money and our sense of self-worth. We will look at how we can use astrology to optimize our resources and establish a more harmonious and productive relationship with our assets. This Seminar will look at how to discover our main financial strengths and weaknesses. From the point of view of practical investment, it will look at the charts for companies and how to gauge their current and future prospects. Likewise it will look at some ways of applying astrology for assessing dominant trends in financial markets. Finally it will look at a few of the main financial features for 1998.

Saturday 6 December 1997
Liz Greene, Küsnacht: The Eternal Triangle

Rivalry in love - whether in a love relationship, in friendship, or within the family - is one of the most painful of human experiences, yet it is also archetypal. Freud coined the term "Oedipus complex" to describe the original family triangle in which experiences of rivalry and jealousy are constellated in childhood. But there are many kinds of triangles and even the Oedipal triangle may not be quite what Freud envisaged. The creation of triangles in relationship is an innate characteristic of the planet Venus, but it is also reflected by other astrological factors, and some individuals are more predisposed to them than others. What do triangles really mean when they enter our lives? This seminar will explore the astrological, mythological and psychological dimensions of the eternal triangle, which at its core may be a sign neither of pathology nor of unresolved infantile conflicts, but may be one of the most profound ways in which we discover and become ourselves.

Saturday 31 January 1998
Liz Greene, Küsnacht: Insecurity
Feelings of insecurity and self-doubt may be reflected by many factors in the birth chart, as well as by certain transits and progressed aspects. Insecurity is an archetypal human condition and sometimes it can be crippling. But the different ways in which it is represented astrologically, and the different psychological roots which lead to it, suggest that we can creatively work with, if not entirely heal, our feelings of insecurity. This seminar will explore the roots and expressions of human insecurity, as well as ways of containing and working with it to turn one of our most painful internal dynamics into a positive tool for development and achievement.

Saturday 28 February 1998
Liz Greene, Küsnacht: Apollo's Chariot
The Sun is a complex symbol in the birth chart, reflecting both past and future, paternal inheritance and individual destiny. It is connected not only with vocation and our expression in the world as individuals, but also with the nature of our deepest religious and spiritual feelings, and with what we need to feel our lives are worth living. This seminar will explore the many levels of the Sun's meaning, mythically, psychologically, and astrologically, examining it through its sign, house, and aspects to other planets as well as through solar progressed aspects. We will also explore why the Sun sometimes seems to remain blocked or unexpressed in particular individuals or at particular times in life, and what we can do to help the Sun to shine more brightly.

Saturday 16 May 1998
Charles Harvey, London: Money and Astrology II

Each one of us has the power to add something of real value to the world. With Saturn entering Taurus on 9th June and forming a long square to Neptune in Aquarius, the Cosmos is asking us to take a long hard look at our values, at the "centre of gravity" in our lives and the myths which guide us as creative, productive individuals. This seminar will continue to explore the way in which our birth chart can reveal our unique ability to become a positive and constructive contributor to our own life and the lives of those with whom we are involved. Focus will be placed on the importance of specific midpoints in the chart. The seminar will also consider the current economic and political climate as the world economy confronts renewed tensions between capitalism and utopian socialism and the outlook for markets and investments. It is not essential to have attended Part 1. To optimise the value of this seminar, do bring your own chart and midpoints with you.

Saturday 23 January 1999
Liz Greene, Zurich: Neptune in Aquarius: The Meaning of its Transits
This seminar will explore the transits of Neptune to planets in the birth chart, with special reference to its movement through Aquarius and the relevance of this to the individual whose chart is triggered. The historical import of Neptune in Aquarius will also be discussed. Also relevant in this seminar is the ongoing square of transiting Saturn in Taurus to Neptune in Aquarius, and we will examine the meaning of this aspect in the heavens and how affects the individual.

Saturday 20 February 1999
Liz Greene, Zurich: Pluto in Sagittarius: The Meaning of its Transits
This seminar will explore the transits of Pluto in the birth chart with special reference to its movement through Sagittarius. All those with planets in mutable signs will receive major hard aspects from transiting Pluto in Sagittarius, and many others will experience its easier aspects or, at the least, minor aspects. Pluto moving through Sagittarius is relevant for everyone. The historical and contemporary importance of the transit in terms of the collective will be discussed, as well as how Pluto works when it moves across natal and progressed planets in the individual chart.

Saturday 20 March 1999 (cancelled)
Charles Harvey, London: Communicating the whole Chart to the Client

The job of the astrologer is both to listen to the client and hear their current situation, yet also to place the present time in the context of the client's larger potential. Above all the astrologer's work is to shine light on the individual's potential and the significance of their present situation and how the present time can be seen as a step towards greater fulfillment. This seminar will set out a model for consultation work which enables the client to obtain a deeper structural understanding of their life and its potential, and allows them to work with the information that the astrologer provides. Students should bring their own birth chart and midpoints.

Saturday 6 November 1999
Liz Greene, Zurich: Old Cheesefoot, Part One: Saturn in the Birth Horoscope
"Old Cheesefoot" is a medieval term for the Devil, a role which Saturn often seems to play. This seminar, the first of two on this planet, will explore Saturn in depth in the birth chart, through its sign and house placements and its aspects to other natal planets. Special emphasis will be given to the emotional experiences of deprivation, fear, limitation, and projection of "inferiority" which accompany Saturn's birth placement, as well as an exploration of the constructive potential and deeper meaning of apparently negative Saturnian experiences. (Note: Some time will be given in the afternoon to charts from members of the seminar group. If you wish your chart discussed as an example, please bring it on a transparency for the overhead projector.)

Saturday 4 December 1999
Liz Greene, Zurich: Old Cheesefoot, Part Two: Saturn in Synastry and in Progressions and Transits
This seminar will explore the way in which Saturn is so often implicated in cross-aspects in important relationships. Although Saturn links between two charts are often very difficult to work with, it seems that they are necessary if a relationship is to reach any level of depth and transformation for both people. The aspects of transiting Saturn to natal planets will also be examined in depth, as well as important transits to natal Saturn and progressed aspects involving this planet. (Note: As with Part One, if you wish your chart discussed as an example, please bring it on a transparency for the overhead projector.)

Liz Greene, Zürich: How to survive Neptune Transits
The peculiarly subtle, "altered state" experience of Neptune transits often conceals the real meaning of the transit until a long time later, and we may blunder through a time of great confusion and suffering, or believe that we have finally found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. This seminar will explore what "happens" to us when natal chart placements receive transits from Neptune, and how we might be able to work with them with greater insight at the same time as being able to honour on non-rational levels the inner process which is occurring. At the best of times we cannot dictate the course of outer planet transits, but we may be able to understand more about what is required of us, based on Neptune's natal placement as well as its archetypal meaning.

Saturday 4 March 2000
Liz Greene, Zürich: A Psychological Approach to Hard Aspects
There are many approaches to the interpretation of hard aspects, and modern astrologers are less inclined to attribute malefic qualities to them and more willing to recognise their potential for creative energy and motivation. However, even with this enlightened attitude, we still complain about natal squares and oppositions, and fear the upcoming "bad" Pluto or Saturn transit. Perhaps we need to look more deeply and with greater realism as well as optimism at the real psychological dynamics and underlying meaning of this group of aspects from the perspective of individual character, heredity, and teleology.

Saturday 18 March 2000
Liz Greene, Zürich: Jupiter: Con Artist or Giver of Gifts?

This seminar will explore the enigmatic Jupiter, who is often interpreted as a "benefic" yet may be seen in the birth chart allied with serious inner and outer difficulties and conflicts, and may equally be spotted in transit accompanying many of life's most difficult experiences. We will approach the meaning of this planet from mythological, psychological, and mundane perspectives, in the birth chart and in transits and progressions, attempting to link together the vast spectrum of experiences, perceptions, and behaviour associated with this most theatrical and volatile image in the planetary pantheon.

Saturday 28 October 2000
Liz Greene, Zürich: The Astrologer, The Counsellor and The Priest
Most astrologers with any degree of psychological insight understand the enormous value of astrology in counselling those in difficulty. The astrological reading can provide access to many deeper areas of the client's psyche, and can be profoundly helpful and healing on many levels. However, it can also prove ineffective or even downright destructive to both astrologer and client. There is often confusion if not outright ignorance about just what happens in an astrological session, on both practical and subtle levels, and astrologers may not fully understand their own motives or what is triggered unconsciously between them and the client. This seminar will explore approaches to counselling using astrological symbolism; ways of interpreting configurations and dealing with difficult questions; moral and philosophical issues, including what a chart can and cannot reveal and where the limits of the astrologer lie; transference and countertransference between astrologer and client, including the synastry between the two charts; practical considerations in terms of boundaries; and communication skills and dilemmas. The seminar is intended not only for professional astrologers but for all those interested in the interface between astrological symbolism and the therapeutic process.

Saturday 25 November 2000
Liz Greene, Zürich: Mars: The Warrior and the Thug
This seminar will explore the many facets of the "red planet", once deemed a malefic but now understood to be at the root of many inner and outer difficulties if it is not acknowledged and expressed. Mars may be linked with some of the worst human excesses of violence and brutality, but the aggressive instinct is vitally necessary for ego formation and any individual's capacity to develop character potentials; and the desire nature, if thwarted in blind or negative ways, can undermine the entire personality structure. Through myth, psychological patterns, and astrological placements by sign, house, and aspect, we will examine both the pathologies and the gifts of Mars, its power in relationships, its links with creative expression and with physical health and illness, the ways in which it is often blocked both individually and collectively, and possible avenues of positive expression which can help the individual to feel more comfortable with Martial energy in an age when it is, even at best, deemed politically incorrect.

Liz Greene, Zürich: The Troubles with Trines

This seminar will explore the group of aspects usually known as "good" - trines, sextiles, and semisextiles which are often interpreted in a simplistic way without the context of the complexities of human psychology. The undoubted gifts and aptitudes reflected by these planetary configurations need to be viewed together with the more difficult dimensions of the horoscope to understand why they are so often undeveloped, or linked with serious problems, and why transiting planets in trine or sextile to natal ones frequently do not reflect the cosmic bonus that astrologers anticipate. Particular focus will be given to ways in which we can work with and develop the "benefic" aspects with greater consciousness.

Saturday 10 February 2001
Liz Greene, Zürich: The Joker in The Pack

Mercury is often equated with "intellect", or with "communication". But there are many kinds of perception and understanding, not all of them intellectual. Recent debates on the nature of intelligence and the appropriateness of intelligence tests highlight our increasing realization that the human capacity for understanding is far more complex than simple intellectual aptitude. In ancient and medieval alchemy this planet was the chief symbol of integration and the unfolding of the inner process of development. This seminar will explore Mercury from mythological and psychological perspectives, in the birth chart and by transit and progression, and also from the mundane perspective in terms of the infamous "retrograde Mercury" cycle which so often seems to correspond to confusion and difficulty in particular collective spheres.

Saturday 20 October 2001, Liz Greene, Zurich
The Psychopath - Astrological SignaturesHannibal
The much-hyped return of Hannibal the Cannibal to the box office signals our continuing horror and fascination for what is know in clinical circles as psychopathy. We tend to associate psychopathic behaviour with the florid and deadly characters of films such as The silence of the Lambs, or historical figures such as Hitler, or criminals such as Charles Manson.
Yet there are many degrees of psychopathy, some of them subtle and alive and well in suburbia; and perhaps there are even elements of it in all of us.
This seminar will explore the possible astrological signatures of psychopathy, raising not only the question of wether particular chart configurationes can reveal or hint at such a personality pattern, but also the much-debated issue of wether psychopaths are born or made. Example charts as well as extensive psychological and mythological exploration may help us to get a clearer picture of this most disturbing, frightening, and yet all-too-common human condition.
Seminar participants are welcome to bring any charts which they feel might be relevant.

Trust No One: The Saturn-Pluto Cycle
We are currently experiencing the half-point of the present Saturn-Pluto cycle which began in 1982-83 when the two planets conjuncted in the last degrees of Libra.
This important and transformative cycle reflects the emergence and development of new forms of the most fundamental human survival mechanisms, involving an often unwilling revelation of the deeper and darker elements of human nature and a sense of confrontation with fate. Yet the fundamental meaning of these two "heavy" planets is not in itself negative. Although as individuals and as a collective we are often, under Saturn-Pluto transits, required to face what we fear most in ourselves and others, the capacity to survive, endure, face emotional truths, and function efficiently as independent entities requires the grit and honesty of these planets.
This seminar will explore the present Saturn- Pluto opposition from Gemini to Sagittarius, in collective and individual terms, as it is reflected as a transiting configuration in individual birth charts and as it is embodied worldly events and trends. We will also examine the special psychological perspective of those born at the critical phases of the cycle, when the planets are in sextile, trine, square, opposition and conjunction. Participants are welcome to bring their own charts on transparency.

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane: The Moon and Venus in the Birth Chart Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
The Moon and Venus are usually considered "feminine" planets which describe different aspects of the female archetype. Yet they are not as simple as mere denominators of mothering versus romantic love. Each of these planets has a complex range of needs and expressions, and they form a polarity in every birth chart, whether that of a man or a woman, which is reflected not only in personal relationship patterns but also in one's relationship to the body and one's capacity for self-appreciation, contentment, and physical and emotional happiness. Like every archetypal polarity, this pair of planets presents enormous challenges to balance and express, even if they are not in difficult aspect to each other in the natal chart.
This seminar will explore the innate and ultimately unresolvable conflict between the two, the particular challenges of natal Venus-Moon aspects, the differences and similarities of expression of these planets in men's and women's charts, their relevance to rivalry and love triangles, and their importance in both the experience of the personal mother and the capacity to "mother" (in both men and women) the children of the imagination as well as of the body.

The Art of Scuba-Diving: Understanding the Water Houses
The 4th, 8th and 12th houses remain an enigma to the astrological student and practitioner, despite many intelligent articles and books explaining their meaning. This is due in part because these houses are concerned with subtle spheres of experience which do not easily lend themselves to rational definitions. Also, older textbooks associate some dire things with these houses: the 8th, for example, was once known as the "House of Death", and the 12th as the "House of Self-Undoing". Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
In consequence, many astrologers avoid probing too deeply into the implications of planets placed here. There is also often a failure in understanding on the part of astrologers when dealing with these houses. Sometimes they are referred to as the "unconscious" houses, implying that any planet placed in these houses in the birth chart is therefore "unconscious". This is a simplistic, somewhat negative, and perhaps even erroneous definition of these mysterious spheres of the horoscope. Yet planets placed in these houses are often connected with some of life's most disturbing and shattering encounters with the invisible as well as with the creative power and imagination of the artist; and it is important to understand water house chart placements as deeply as possible.
This seminar will explore the water houses from mythic and psychological as well as ancient, medieval and modern astrological perspectives. Students are welcome to bring their birth charts on transparency.

Mother-in-Law Jokes aren't funny: The Astrology of other People's Families

Astrological patterns among blood-related family members provide us with one of the most revelatory and interesting areas of astrological Other people's families...exploration. But little attention is given to the ways in which astrology works when we aren't blood-related to the people whom life appears to "force" on us though apparent chance.
This seminar will explore the psychological dynamics of some typical examples of non-blood-related interactions, such as adoptive parents and children, step-mothers, step-fathers and step-children, mothers- and fathers-in-law, and ex-wives and ex-husbands. Surprisingly, the links between our own charts and those belonging to "other people's families" are as close and as powerful as those with blood-related family members, suggesting that nothing that happens to us in life is really "by chance". But the particular psychology and mythology which underpin such apparently fortuitous relationships give planetary links a different and often deeply problematic expression.
The greater our understanding of how these links operate, the more creative our interaction can be with those who have apparently entered our lives at random, but with whom we must share our past and our future.

The Pursuit of the unobtainable: Exploring the Fire Houses
firehouses...
The fire houses in the horoscope (1st, 5th and 9th) are usually, unlike the water houses, given a "good press" in traditional literature, and are associated with things like "self-expression", "creativity", "luck", and "philosophy".
Yet these houses are not so simple, for they all carry an innate challenge for any planet placed in them: how to accommodate personal reality with a vision of what always lies beyond our reach, and the necessary courage and suffering required to pursue our dreams of the future and the potential which we will, inevitably, fail to live completely in one short incarnation.
This seminar will explore the fire houses from mythological, psychological and astrological perspectives, including not only natal planets placed there, but also transits and progressions to these houses, and the effects of synastry when someone else's horoscope configurations trigger our fire house planets. We will also explore in depth the enigmatic symbol of the Ascendant, the portal to the first fire house and the key to how we define our reality and gradually build the central solar sense of an individual identity.

Ashes to Ashes and Dust to Dust; Exploring the Earthy Houses (fully booked!)
The earthy houses are traditionally associated with worldly matters suEarthy Housesch as money, health and career, and as such have not been accorded the deeper importance and value they deserve. When we want to know whether we will be successful, or whether we will fall ill, we consider planets in these houses; but otherwise they are not viewed psychologically, nor do we explore links such as the relationship between mother and vocation, or the equation of the physical body with self-value, or the nature of illness as a reflection of inner conflicts. Although psychological astrologers perceive everything in the horoscope as symbolic, nevertheless there is a tendency to interpret planets in these houses literally, missing their more profound significance and the spheres of the inner life of which the body and its worldly expressions are a metaphor.
This seminar will explore the many subtle levels of the earthy houses, and the deeper meaning of planets placed there, natally and by transit and progression. These houses, which include the MC as the cusp of the 10th, are a reflection of how we need to shape and embody what we are, and ultimately it is these houses which decide how able we are to incarnate the individual identity with which we are born.

What goes around comes around - the moon and childhood (Fully booked!) What goes around, comes around....
The deeply ingrained patterns reflected by the Moon in the birth chart reflect not only our maternal inheritance, but also our capacity to interact on an emotional level with other people and with life. Natal aspects to the Moon, even more than its sign and house placement, can be viewed as a vivid picture of what we encounter in the first ten months of life and how we react to it, shaping our responses and colouring our perceptions of other people.
This seminar will explore the Moon‘s natal position, particularly its applying and separating aspects, not only in terms of the psychological inheritance from and perception of the personal mother, but also in terms of the early and permanent shaping of our inner nature. Many conflicts and problems in both relationships and in health matters are related to lunar aspects, and insight can help to release energy and alter and enrich the level if not the meaning of the Moon‘s expression in the birth chart.
Students are invited to bring their natal chart on transparency, and also if possible the chart of the personal mother, to explore the relationship between the natal Moon and the person with whom we form our first emotional bond.

The Transit of Uranus into Pisces: Redefining God
(Fully booked!)

In March 2003, Uranus leaves its seven-year passage through Aquarius and enters Pisces for the first time in 84 years. At the same time, it will be forming a trine to transiting Saturn in Cancer, a critical phase of the Saturn-Uranus cycle which began in 1989. Although Uranus moves back into Aquarius for a while, major changes will begin to occur, not only in the collective psyche, but also in those individuals with planets in the early part of the mutable signs. Uranus in Pisces...
This seminar will explore the possibilities of the forthcoming transit, historically, in terms of national charts, as a reflection of profound changes in the collective psyche, and, most importantly for the astrological student, in terms the meaning and psychological impact of this Uranus transit to individuals with natal planets or angles at the beginning of Pisces, Virgo, Gemini and

How to be a Fly on the Wall: Exploring the Air Houses (fully booked!)¨
The air houses are generally known as houses of "relationship", yet they do not pertain to human feeling. They are also sometimes Airfly called the "social" houses, yet they are not concerned with emotional interaction between human beings. What, then, are they really about? What do we mean when we use terms such as "communication" and "education" in relation to the 3rd house? What role do siblings play in our
